Objective: The Scholar of the Month program was created as a promotion vehicle to encourage saving early for college. The grants are announced with an aggressive newspaper campaign to create awareness of the idea every child is entitled to a college education. Each month, a child is chosen by a committee of school teachers and foundation board members from both the Elementary and Middle schools. $100 is put in trust for each child towards their college education. By the terms of the award, if the student does not go to college before two years after graduation from high school the award and all interest is forfeited and awarded to another child. The program has had the desired results. Many parents have shown interest in contributing or beginning plans of their own. It has raised the awareness level of the desirability of a college education as well.
