The family of Hy Schmierer established this scholarship to help support the K-9th Grade After School Program, operated by the Hancock Community Education Foundation. “Our parents Hy and Horty Schmierer have always been supportive of the Hancock Community and especially the children who attend the Hancock Central School District. It was their desire to provide opportunities to the children of the Hancock CSD outside of the education and enrichment they received in school each day.”
Hy wanted to share his love of the game of tennis and he offered the use of their tennis facilities to be used as the Hancock CSD home tennis courts, as well as the site for many Regional Tournaments. Hy and Horty also sponsored a trip for the Tennis Team to attend Virginia Slims National Tennis Tournament in New York City.
In addition to their support of the Tennis Team they also wanted to provide opportunities of enrichment by sponsoring many field trips. Hy and Horty took a personal interest in the future success of the children who live in the Hancock Community. “With the Hy Schmierer Family Fund we will be able to continue to support the children of the Hancock Community through the After School Program,” said Hy’s Family.
